A delicious tea experience inspired by well-established benefits through peer-reviewed scientific publications as well as millennia of tea drinking history and traditional medicine systems around the world.
At Westholme, we care about the whole tea drinking experience – the taste, the culture, the source, the stories, and pure enjoyment in every cup. We also know that ever since tea + tisanes were first discovered they has been utilized as plant medicine.
We are pleased to share our favourite teas + tisanes to support wellness through the Autumn. Wellness will look different each season. Just as nature changes with the seasons, so do our bodies. These changes can bring discomfort, but looking to nature can show us how we might adapt.
The sun sinks lower in the sky each day and temperatures decline. Nature is slowing and quieting. Many plants turn their efforts from flowering or fruiting to rooting. We harvest + give thanks for all that the previous season provisioned. This time of transition into the darkest part of the year is a good time for slowing down + letting go - like we see in nature - allowing for release. It is a good time to consider: what do we want to bring into winter storage, and what is taking up valuable space. We have the opportunity to amend our inner soils, creating an environment that can nourish the seeds that will come to bloom again in the Spring.
We selected steeps that have attributes specifically complimentary to this season: balanced, warming, soothing, grounding, nutritive + mineral rich, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, gently energizing and immune-boosting...supportive of digestion and gut health, the lungs, reproductive + circulatory systems, aid in regulating mood + the stress response, help balance blood sugar and cholesterol...with more to discover as well!

:: MORE ABOUT WELLNESS ::
:: THE TEAS ::
While each tea type presents slightly different healthful qualities, all teas (green, black, white, oolong, and puerh which come from the same plant: Camellia sinensis) contain powerful phyto-nutrients which are completely unique to tea the plant. High quality teas contain many essential vitamins and minerals. Antioxidants are abundant in the tea leaf in the form of polyphenols and have have been linked to a range of health benefits.
What truly sets tea apart is L-theanine. All traditional teas naturally contain caffeine however, unlike other caffeine-containing plants this is balanced by a unique amino-acid that increases relaxation called L-theanine. The tea plant is the only plant known to contain L-theanine! When working together, caffeine and L-theanine produce a gently sustained ‘relaxed alertness’ which can improve focus, reduce stress and anxiety, and uplift mood.
Golden Snail, like all tea, has an affinity for the heart. Black teas specifically have been shown to improve circulation, balance blood pressure, and improve cholesterol. Golden Snail is an Autumnal Flush tea, meaning that is is harvested during the Autumn and the tea has benefited from short-term aging. The steep and captures your attention and invokes a feeling of autumn: grounding steep with subtle toasted sweetness, an easy-going appeal and highly aromatic. There is an enigmatic linger to this tea that combines a delicate malt, notes of cocoa and tea flowers. If you listen carefully, the Golden 'Snails' may “talk”…a cheerful chatter arises from the steep as the tightly rolled dark leaves and bright buds unfurl below the surface of the hot water.
Jia Ji is a Shou (ripe, cooked) Puerh tea. Puerhs are exclusively from Yunnan Province, and are the only tea type that uses microbial fermentation to process + age the leaves. Along with all of the other benefits tea is known for, Puerhs are known for aiding in cleansing the body and easing digestion. Lightly aged Shou Puerhs like Jia Ji are known to send Qi (vitality) downwards, which is exactly what is happening in nature at this time of year as the leaves begin to change colour and fall to the ground. The experience of the steep is truly quite grounding.
:: THE HERBALS ::
Rooted + Pure Spice are both packed with herbs well-known for anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and immune-boosting properties. These herbs are a source of easily absorbed minerals and vitamins, and as well are gently energizing, warming and circulating. Together these teas are supportive of liver, kidney, digestive, lung and reproductive health.
Rooted is a powerhouse of beneficial roots (Turmeric, Ginger + Liquorice Root) with loads of flavour and a bit of a peppery kick; A wonderful tonic for the immune system. The mouth fills with gentle, comforting spices, slight sichuan tingle (a taste sensation referred to in China as "ma"), balanced and complimented by and a natural sweetness that lingers on the tip of the tongue from the ginger and liquorice. Steep and sip this infusion during a cold to soothe the throat, or calm the stomach. Also a great steep for joint health. Or when trying to curb a craving for refined sugar.
Pure Spice is a mélange of traditional Indian spices (Ginger Root, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Cloves) packed with flavour and vitality. This is our herbal 'Chai'. This tisane is very versatile: it can be steeped and enjoyed as-is for a warming and soothing cup. Or...the possibilities are endless...think cooked with milk (or milk alternative), to create an excellent herbal elixir, or herbal chai latte, or added into your daily black tea. Add honey or a touch of pure maple syrup to taste. Pure Spice makes an excellent addition to broths, soups, or curries. This blend can also be used as a mulling spice to add depth and interest to apple juice or sauce.
In addition to the physical characteristics of these teas + tisanes, all of our Seasonal Wellness Sets are intended to be a simple way to incorporate a ritual that you can look forward to, share with others (or not!) and invites slowness into your day. We all know the value in pausing for a 'breather' to help our interconnected mental and physical well-being. Drinking tea and herbs offers a sort of moving meditation and ‘tea mindfulness’ where we can find comfort, and opportunity to fill up our cup and savour the moment with a delicious + warming cup!
