...
Lapsang Souchong originated in the Wuyi Mountains during the Qing dynasty.
The history and the lore that surround this tea are both fascinating and varied.
There are stories that speak of tea merchants desperately trying to save tea leaves from spoiling during wartime by processing them over open fire. And there are other stories that relate how Lapsang Souchong came to be during the long journey tea had to make from China, through Mongolia and into Europe.
Whether out of necessity or for preservation purposes this pine smoked tea has become known the world over for its strong smoky flavour. The larger souchong leaves of the tea plant lend themselves well to the processing involved in producing lapsang. Following the withering, the smoking of the tea leaves forms part of the final oxidation.
