RETAILER OF THE WEEK :: Nootka Rose Milling Company

Located in Metchosin and after the native wild rose Nootka Rose stone grinds the highest quality BC grown, certified organic, heritage and ancient wheat varieties. From their little shop they mill fresh and nutritionally dense flours - nothing added & nothing is removed.

Every grain of grain comes from a BC grower - often from the Island as they source as close to home as they can find. They embody their values of social and environmental responsibility through community oriented entrepreneurship.

We were interested to learn through an EAT magazine feature of Nootka that ‘terroir’ is a term applied to grain as well as tea, AND just as there are some who identify as ‘tea geeks’, the ‘grain geek’ exists as well! The folks at Nootka are passionate to share with community the myriad of benefits of preserving the time honoured craft of freshly grinding whole natural grains - just the way nature intended. Grain is of top importance of the products to purchase pure and organic for a long list of reasons. They supply true grains for true crafting of breads, pasta and pastries. You may already be familiar with their flours if you have ever been to Wildfire Bakery or Frys Bakery in Victoria.

Go to Nootka for fresh flours, and fresh baked breads & pastries, but stay to peruse a delightful stock of  specialty groceries from local artists, craftsfolk, growers, and makers. When you go to purchase your flour or loaf of artisan bread (and of course our Westholme Tea!) you might also bring home Four Quarters Meats charcuterie, Wild Mountain Dinners frozen dinners, Sea Chest ice cream sandwiches, or honey and vegetables collected from right down the road.
