Yunnan Gold Tips - Dian Hong - Limited Harvest

Regular price $9.50
Style: Black

Origin: Yunnan Province, China

Description: Yunnan province has the oldest tea cultivation history in the world, with mountainous elevation and mild temperatures that offer ideal growing conditions for tea plants. This terroir, with its unique soil profile, adds to the popular richness and mildly toasty palate of Yunnan’s local dian hong (red teas). The appearance of the beautiful, twisted golden leaves of this Yunnan tea shows the craftsmanship involved in its creation and oxidation, and the steep does not disappoint. Made from a cultivar unique to Yunnan Province, from a mountainous region near the capital city Kunming, the facility that makes this tea focuses only on high-quality black and pu-erh tea making.

Tasting Notes: The smell of fresh cinnamon is grounded in deeper fruity notes on the nose. The taste of molasses - its deep, malted sweetness - develops into a soft bitterness and fruity acidity reminiscent of dark chocolate, with a toasted warmth. The mouth of this tea is clear and direct, with a thirst-quenching quality. There is a very gentle bite at the back of the tongue which fades into a pleasant linger.

Brewing Instructions: 3g per cup. 100ºC water. Steep 2 -3 minutes. Re-steep.

China has a rich and ancient tradition of producing high quality teas of all varieties, and black tea is no exception. This is where tea culture and industry, as we know it, began nearly 2,000 years ago.

Known as ‘Red Tea’ in China, the tea leaves from the Camellia sinensis sinensis plant are smaller and finer than their Indian counterparts, the Camellia sinensis assamica, and prefer cooler mountainous regions. Usually plucked by hand and gently processed, the end result are exquisitely fragrant teas with lesser levels of astringency and a soft body.

Several Chinese provinces are famous for their regional tea selections: Fujian Province is home to the well-known, pine-smoked Lapsang Souchong, while Keemun tea, the official choice of the British Queen, is produced in Anhui Province. Yunnan province produces the ever-popular varieties of Yunnan black tea and is also the region where China started its tea cultivation.

The organic teas we import are artisanally farmed and crafted. They may change with each harvest season. The same tea harvested at a different time of year and processed by a different tea maker will vary slightly in flavour and finish.
