Holiday Spiced Apple Crisp

Holiday Spiced Apple Crisp

Apples are abundant currently here on Vancouver Island, and we are getting creative with ways to enjoy each and every one. Here is our spiced take on a traditional apple crisp.

Ingredients ::

Apple Crisp
6 apples sliced thinly
1 cup of old fashioned oats
1 cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter

Holiday Spice Simple Syrup
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup water
4-6 tsp Pure Spice
1 tsp cinnamon

Directions ::

Prepare the Pure Spice simply syrup. Add water, sugar and Pure Spice to a saucepan on the stove and bring to a gentle boil, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Allow to cool. Pour into bottle or jar through a fine mesh sieve, tea filter or cheesecloth. Allow to cool completely before sealing.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Pick, core, and slice the apples into uniform half-inch thick pieces (peeling optional depending on the texture you prefer). Toss the sliced apples with a dash of cinnamon in the Holidays Spice simple syrup in a large mixing bowl. Transfer the apple mixture into a greased nine-inch square baking dish. Combine the oats, flour, and brown sugar in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Cut the cold, cubed butter into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter until crumbly. Spread the oat mixture evenly over the prepared apples in the baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly.
