Origin:Kagoshima, Japan (Sencha) and Hokkaido, Japan (Brown rice)
Ingredients: 1st Flush Sencha leaves, Hokkaido roasted brown organic rice
Description: This classic Japanese tea is a world-renowned combination of green tea leaves with lightly toasted grains of brown rice. While adding toasted rice was initially done with Bancha teas (‘last tea,’ a lower grade of green tea) to bulk up the quantity and lower the price for poorer members of society, the distinct warm flavour of genmaicha is now enjoyed across Japan and the world. This particular genmaicha is made with the tender first flush leaves of a traditional Sencha harvest, and paired with organic toasted rice from the Hokkaido region.
Tasting Notes: The aroma of toasted sesame and an almost salty quality meets the nose. The palate starts with flavours of fresh cooked rice and toasted sesame seeds, developing a fresh green grassy brightness and a slight nutty notes. The second steeping is a bit sweeter, with less overall umami and creamy texture - the steep feels clear and more direct. A sweet mineral linger builds under the tongue. Creates a sense of fullness. Excellent paired with a savoury meal.
First Steep - 10g per 200ml. 90ºC water. Steep 30 seconds.
Second Steep - 200ml. 95ºC water. Pour immediately.
* a creamier, more umami steep
Certified Organic
Tea cultivation and processing originated in China about 5,000 years ago, and while they carry on a rich and ancient tradition of producing high-quality teas of all styles, their green varieties are truly beyond comparison. The flavour profiles, aromas, and processing techniques from each tea-growing region vary tremendously. Some become silky and smooth, while some become powerful and astringent. Whether for casual daily drinking, or for special moments of ceremony and contemplation, Chinese green teas truly nurture the soul.
The organic teas we import are artisanally farmed and crafted. They may change with each harvest season. The same tea harvested at a different time of year and processed by a different tea maker will vary slightly in flavour and finish.
